Abstract

The paper attempts to review the extent to which the notion of offender rehabilitation has been interpreted by the Malaysia Prisons Department, particularly in relation to the provision of educational opportunities amongst young prisoners. The data from the interviews with prison officials is discussed as to provide answers why the Malaysian government has been providing educational opportunities for young prisoners. It is expected that the understanding of prison officials on the topic will give an answer to which why the Malaysian government is seen committed to providing educational opportunities for young prisoners in prisons. Finally, the paper will suggest the Malaysian prison officials believe the implementation of the notion of offender rehabilitation amongst young prisoners by using education will help the government to fulfill the national interest towards producing useful citizens once they are released later.
