Abstract

This is a conceptual paper of a future study based on the review of literatures related to collaboration networks, absorptive capacity and innovation performance.Innovations are becoming more complicated for SMEs as they are facing rapid growth of technology and competitive market.SMEs find it difficult to carry out innovation because they may lack both technical and managerial skills.However, they can achieve greater benefits if they are more active and open towards innovation.The objective of this study is to examine for an imminent research whether absorptive capacity mediates the relationship between the collaboration networks of SMEs among services industry in Malaysia and innovation performance.The paper went on to analyse the issues, concepts and objectives for the forthcoming study through several literatures of various disciplines.The conceptual paper signifies to supplement literatures for academics as reference for their research.The result of this future research may provide information to SMEs on how to leverage absorptive capacity in order to enhance firm‘s innovation activities.It will also be relevant to policy-makers who design support mechanisms and schemes to promote the creation and growth of small firms.
