Abstract

Microfinance institutions (MFIs) are considered not only as important institutions in the financial system in Nigeria but they also play a significant role in the country’s social as well as economic development.Although the MFIs are known for their social as well economic contributions, as an area of research, these institutions have attracted limited research attention. The literature review suggests that MFIs as a field of study have received minimal theoretical as well as empirical contributions. Based on the literature review and findings of past studies, this paper identifies the research gaps and attempts to provide a research agenda for examining MFIs in Nigeria. The paper specifically emphasizes on the shortcomings of previous studies as well as highlights the issues and areas of research in MFIs that need to be addressed empirically.
