Abstract

Since 1998 and its peak during the General Election on 29th November 1999, the government was very annoyed at the support of the Malays. The 10th General Election caused an uproar to the government as two states with Malays majority fell into the hands of the opposition.Other states, showed an increase of total voters and that of seats for the opposition. The election results are manifestations of community trust towards the government.Based on the stated problems, this study attempts to identify the factors that led to the increase or decrease in population trust level towards the government.Findings of this study showed that the majority of the population has good level of trust towards the performance of Federal Government. However, “uncertain” answers among the majority of the Malaysian people were concerned with the national financial administration, trustworthiness and priority for leadership.Concerning the State Government, a majority of the people felt that the performance of the State Governments was good, and at the states controlled by the opposition (Kelantan and Terengganu) the performance of State Government was at the lower good level.Hence, this indicator showed results when Terengganu State Government fell to the National Front and the Kelantan State Government, propelled by PAS, had a narrow win in the 2004 General Election.Although the people’s trust for the capacity of the opposition to form a government was weak, nonetheless, the ruling National Front failed to reap a hundred percent support.
