Abstract
Islam Hadhari was introduced by YAB. Dato’ Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi after he was elected as the Prime Minister of Malaysia.It was claimed as an old concept and reintroduced in the midst of current globalization and national interest of Malay community and leadership as well as the Malaysian society in general.Islam Hadhari aims at interpreting the actual Islamic teachings, and an approach required for applying the Islamic teachings in their daily lives. This article will analyze Islam Hadhari as a continuation of Islamic policies being adopted by Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad’s administration.Among the main items focused in this article are the emergence of Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s leadership as the prime actor that brings about the policy as a modern contemporary approach towards Islam Hadhari, factors that contribute to the adoption/implementation of Islam Hadhari concept, the objectives of the concept, and the future challenges in decision making to be effectively understood among the various ethnic groups in Malaysia.
