Abstract

The international tourism including Muslim tourism segment shows the incredible growth year by year. However, after Sept 11, 2001, as Muslim tourists were facing to a certain extent restrictions travelling to the USA and European countries, there was a drastic drop of Muslim tourists to both destination and shifted to other Muslim countries. Thus, it is relevant for destination marketers currently focusing on the Muslim tourism segment as a target. As religion represents one of important factors in the decision-making process with regard to travel destinations, it is important to ensure that Islamic attributes are available in those destinations and services. This availability may lead to tourist satisfaction as well as inspire multiple return visits. Thus, Islamic tourism was introduced as an alternative for tourist not only motivated them to get the pleasure but also the blessing from God while travelling. In this regard, plans to market destinations for Muslim tourists should be guided by Sharia (Islamic code of life) rules specifically those that pertain to tourism activities. The success of Islamic tourism could be guided by observing Islamic teachings in tourism activities. The purpose of this paper is to explore the concept of Islamic tourism and the Islamic attributes as it can be used as a base for tailoring Muslim tour packages.
