Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the moderating effect of Islamic work ethic on the relationship of emotional intelligence and leadership practice among middle level administrators in Malaysian public universities. Basically, the main challenges for the higher education institutions are to ensure academic programs provided are market driven and able to respond to the changing needs of various economic sectors.Thus higher education needs to function as an effective institution.Obviously the recent challenges require the key personnel of the said institutions to equip themselves with leadership quality in order to achieve organizational goals.Previous studies have suggested that effective leadership was influenced by several factors such as emotional intelligence. In the meantime, another significant issue in leadership is ethical behaviors of the leaders.The respondents consisted of middle level administrators in Malaysian public-universities throughout the country.Using a structured questionnaire, a total of 500 surveys were distributed to selected respondents.A total of 289 usable questionnaires were obtained.The results indicated that Islamic work ethic moderates the relationship between emotional intelligence and leadership practice.Consequently, several plausible reasons were also discussed.The findings have some contributions both to the practical and theoretical implications.
