Abstract

For quite a long period, Africans and, indeed, Nigerians have been deluded to believe that road traffic accident is an integral element of human fate; nevertheless, a majority of these fate are associated with human errors, many drivers or road users are with little or no education for community safety.The aim of this work is to affirm the roles of social workers in assisting the road user.Qualitative research design was adopted for the work.Data collected with the Interview Schedule for Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps and Interview Guide for selected group of people.This was administered to 30 respondents, which comprises both male and female in the Local government.The purposive sampling was selected to get rich information that enhance the topic being studied.The focus of the data collection was on the roles of social workers regarding the sustaining community safety and family welfare. The purpose of the study was to state the roles of social workers, improved standards of living and the safety of the community; full employment of labour and other factors of production in the community; accelerated, coordinated and sustained economic development and convergence in the community; expansion of trade and economic relations in the community; enhanced levels of international competitiveness in the areas of community development programmes; organization for increased production and productivity of people in the community; achieving of a greater measure of economic leverage and effectiveness of Member in dealing with groups in the community.Man initiates the process that may yield a road traffic accident (RTA) by travelling.He or she may travel as a pedestrian, as a passenger in a vehicle or as the operator of a vehicle.To these extents, such a person bears some responsibilities even if passively so as a passenger.The implication of this work is to contribute to social change by informing social worker on their roles and responsibilities for a sustained community safety.
