Abstract
Occupational safety literatures reveal that human behavior is a major contributor to occupational accidents. However, there was a lack of studies discussing the influence of person factors that caused accidents. The aim of this paper is to show the role of safety commitment as a mediator in the relationship between safety motivation and safety performance.Using self-administered questionnaires, the study involved 663 employees working in the petrochemical industries. The finding indicates that safety commitment partially mediates the relationship between safety motivation and safety performance. Therefore, employees’ safety commitment and motivation are crucial for improving safety performance. Employers, on the other hand, should establish strategies to enhance commitment through education and training. Reward should encourage employees to be more proactive and participative in safety programs.
