Abstract

Pavement quality is an important element in ensuring user satisfaction. This study addresses the problem of shortage of sand as well as the price increase. It is proposed that new formula of the pavement layer could be constructed by mixing 100% reach of garnet in future. The replacement of garnet in a layer of sub base will adopt abandoned waste. The objectives of this study are to determine the degree of density and value of California Bearing Ratio (CBR) mixture and categorize degrees permeability for the sub base mixture between sand and garnet. In addition to testing density, there are several laboratory tests such as compaction test, CBR and permeability of sand and garnet with a ratio of 10 percent, 20 percent and 30 percent of garnet in the mixture. The test was conducted to determine the optimum mix proportion as sand replacement for sub-base layer. From the analysis, it is found that a optimum mix proportion of sand and garnet is used in the construction of sub base layer. This is evidenced by the value of CBR and permeability mixture is sufficient to the value of CBR sub base that is 20% and range of permeability which is 0.001-1.000 cm/s. As a conclusion, a mixture of 70% sand and 30% garnet is a optimum mix proportion that can used in the construction layers of sub base.
