Abstract
Discussions to restore local government elections in Malaysia over a decade until today. This issue brought by the opposition political parties after DAP and PKR obtained the mandate to form the government in Penang and Selangor after the 12th general election in 2008. For example, the Penang State Legislative Assembly passed the Local Government Elections Enactment in 2012 but unable to exercise as it contravened with Section 15 of the Local Government Act 1976. In other words, the agenda rejected by the Federal Government during the BN’s administration. Anyhow, after the 14th general election, when the PH obtained a mandate to form a government, they could explore the possibility and feasibility of restoring local government elections. For 22 months in power, the PH government had a good chance to conduct the local election as soon as possible, but this issue is still under review, investigation, and discussion among the PH’s components party. Therefore, this article will discuss the issue as attempt to enhance the spirit of democracy or just as a political party agenda to influence people voting for them.
