Abstract

This research assesses the solid waste management awareness and practices of the student of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). The paper presents an overview of the awareness and practice of the student towards solid waste management. The random sampling technique was used to collect the quantitative data through questionnaire survey. A total of 100 students were participating in this survey. The findings have shown UUM students were highly aware of the solid waste management. On the other hand, their practices in terms of reduce and reuse of solid waste were very good. They have also shown a good practice in terms of segregation and recycling. Therefore, in overall, the findings have shown that the students' level of awareness has influenced their practice in terms of segregation, reduce, reuse and recycle except in practicing the disposal towards solid waste management. This research recommended that environmental education can be considered in the Malays’ education system to inculcate the proper practice in solid waste management.
