Abstract

A familiar chapter or section in most introductory texts on tourist discusses its impacts on the host community (for recent examples see Ryan1991; mc-Intosh and Goeldener 1990; Hudman and Hawkins 1989). The usual approach is to provide a stocktaking inventory of the positive and negative impacts so that the general reader, or the beginner in tourism studies, can form a more balanced perspective on the contribution of the tourist industry to the host community. Exposure to the more specific areas in the inventory is usually uneven, however, and the depth of insight into particular areas ultimately depends on how much information is available to them.
