Abstract
The aim of this study is to establish the factors affecting the proficiency of UUM Matriculation students in learning English as a foreign language, namely attitude and motivation. In line with this aim, this study seeks answers to questions of whether the students have favourable attitude towards English, and whether they have high motivation to study English. This study also investigates whether there are correlations between these two variables, with the proficiency of UUM Matriculation Center students in the English placement test. A sample of 294 Matriculation Center students underwent an English placement test. Next they were required to respond to the questionnaire. It was found that the attitude variable was not highly manifested in the students. On the other hand, most of them have moderate levels of motivation. No correlation between attitude and performance in the test was established, but some correlation was established, but some correlation was established between motivation and the students performance in the placement test.
