Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the role of telecommunications infrastructure in the Malaysian economic growth for the period 1985-2003. The economic growth model was estimated by including, among others, telecommunications infrastructure measured by the penetration rates of fixed and mobile lines per 100 inhabitants. The study found a consistently negative relationship between telecommunications infrastructure and economic growth. However Malaysian telecommunications infrastructure experienced increasing returns to scale which supports the critical mass theory. This implies that positive contribution will be realised as the country’s telecommunications infrastructure becomes more developed reaching a 40% penetration rate.
