Abstract

The objective of the research was to investigate the subjective well-being among the elderly, aged 55 and above, who lived in the 'Pondok' housing system. This study examines the relationship of social participation and self concept with life satisfaction of the older persons. Findings ofthe research indicated that the sociodemographic factors of age (r = -0.29, p<0.01), number of children (r = 0.25, p <0.05) and health status (x2 = 4.61, p<10.01) were significantly related to social participation. The study also indicated that sociodemographic factors of age, (r = -0.24, p <0.011, number of children(r = 0.22, p<10.05) and health status (x2 = 6.42, p <0.01) were significantly related to self-concept. Life satisfaction was significantly related to social participation (r = 0.36,p <0.01), selfconcept (r = 0.58, p <0.01), age (r = 0.21, p <0.05) and health status (x2= 6.87, p <0.01). Social participation, selfconcept and health status are important in determining life satisfaction of older persons.
