Abstract

Over the last decade, numerous ethnic violence occurred in southern Thailand, in particular three provinces near Thailand-Malaysia border that consist of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat. This civil disturbance might threaten the sovereignty of the state and challenge the effectiveness and management of the government. It can also hinder the economic development in this area. Some of the problem are caused by misinterpretation of political history between the government and the people in this locality. At the same time, a deep sense of Muslim-Malay had been implanted in Thai-Muslim while Thai- Muslim ignores patriotism of Thai. Another aspect of the problem is that the government policies are not appropriate and inclusive especially education policy, economic development and resources management in the local community. One of the most pressing concerns of all is that the government misunderstands the culture of the people in the region and has the benefit of the state budget; therefore, this has been a serious problem and conflict between the state and local resident for many years. If the government has repeatedly ignored understanding of a deep root of problem and appropriated resolution has not been applied, this violence disturbance will persists for a long time.
