Abstract

The policy and programme development for the eradication of poverty in Malaysia can be said to be successful with the reduction of absolute poverty which reached 3.8% in 2010 compared to 49% in 1970, that is, before the New Economic Policy was introduced.However, the more challenging current economic situation as well as Malaysia’s vision of becoming a high-income nation has changed the citizens’ definition of poverty as not only dealing with fulfilling basic needs but more towards increasing the quality of life.This makes the claim that poverty is measured by the various dimensions of life and is not solely based on income.As a result, this working paper will highlight the Analysis of Sustainable Living (ASL) approach which is holistic, coherent and integrated in addressing the problem of poverty by emphasising on the capacity and ability of the poor to merge their available assets to plan various livelihood strategies towards achieving a more sustainable life.
