Abstract

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of the programmes conducted by three rehabilitation centres for delinquents. In these centres, the delinquents undergo programmes which aimed to give guidance and help the delinquents change their unwanted behaviour. Questionnaires and interview were used as instruments. The questionnaires used are adapted from the research done by Azizi (1999). Alpha Cronbach is used to test the reliability of this research. It showed that the overall Alpha value for the whole programme is 0.91. The Alpha value for the Academic, Vocational, Co-Curriculum, Religious Knowledge and Counseling Programme are 0.91, 0.89, 0.91, 0.92 dan 0.92 respectively. To ensure reliability of the research, interviews were conducted with the officers and the adolescents. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the respondents’ demographic factor and the effectiveness of the programmes. The sample consists of 184 respondents which were chosen at simplified random. The variables used in the research are the Academic, Vocational, Co-Curriculum, Religious Knowledge and Counseling Programme. The data was analyzed by using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science). Findings have shown that Vocational, Religious Knowledge and Counseling Programme to be less effective compared with the Academic and Co-Curriculum Programme. To test the hypothesis, inferential statistics such as the t- test was used. The results of the research showed that there is no significant difference in the way the academic programme was carried out in these two schools, namely Sekolah Henry Gurney and Sekolah Tunas Bakti. There are significant differences between the vocational, co-curriculum, religious knowledge and counseling programmes in these two schools.
