Abstract

This study explore the inpatients claims of public workers who are covered by employer-sponsored health insurance plan. The data is taken from the experience of a public university employees in Malaysia from year 2014-2015. As the public servants in Malaysia are entitled to free health care services at the public hospital, this study provides further evidence on the choices of health insurance plan and health care utilization. Specifically, this study attempts to examine the effect of age and gender in inpatient claims behaviors. The results reveal that gender is associated with the choices of health insurance plan, influence health care utilization and the length of hospital stays. However, there is no relationship between gender and inpatient claims. The study finds evidence that health care users have higher mean age than the non users. In addition, health plan choice has significant association with health care utilization.
