Abstract

Purpose—The research is to investigate the smart manufacturing implementation in the food industry in Malaysia, by understanding the readiness index of smart manufacturing for the food industry, and develop a new model for smart manufacturing implementation for the food industry. Methodology—The research used the mixed methods to find the answers to the research questions. Findings—Our quantitative analysis showed humanware and inforware that were mediated by technoware in smart manufacturing implementation. Technoware had a direct significant relationship with the smart manufacturing implementation in the food factory. Besides, thematic findings revealed the "Smart Food Manufacturing Model" on the key capabilities (as “six wares”), are arranged in prioritized were technoware, humanware, inforware, orgaware, manageware, and partnerware. Implications—The realization of smart manufacturing is explored by boosting the knowledge in the new model for smart manufacturing in the food industry. The “six-wares” would practically assist for smart manufacturing implementation for food manufacturers, and policymakers, i.e. the IR4.0 policy for the Government. Originality—This research enriched and expanded the key factors that influenced smart manufacturing implementation. Future research could investigate what beyond IR4.0 or smart manufacturing, such as the disruptive technological innovations, big-data-driven and learning factory
