Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the emergence of civil disobedience and its impact on the 2008 Malaysia general election. This paper argues, after Abdullah Badawi took over as Prime Minister in October 2003 he promised to improve the democratization process by making several changes in the administration. However, he failed to implement the changes. Consequently, civil disobedience emerged, which in turn affected the performance of the Barisan Nasional (The National Front) in the 2008 general election. In this election, the Barisan Nasional (BN) failed to maintain their two-thirds majority of parliamentary seats and also lost five states to the opposition. Subsequently, Abdullah Badawi regigned a year later and replaced by his deputy Najib Razak
