Abstract
Gig work consists of income-earning activities outside of traditional, long-term employer-employee relationships. Instead of a traditional, in-office, full-time job with a single company, gig workers work as short-term, temporary, or independent contractors for one or a variety of employers. Rise number of gig workers build a gig economy trend. A gig economy is a free market system in which temporary positions are common and organizations hire independent workers for short-term commitments. Gigs workers in the field of logistics are no exception to grow in the world and even in Malaysia. The public can be gig workers when they have the vehicle, the time and the will. Examples of logistics gig employees include e-hailing passengers, food or goods. Apart from that, there are also services as forwarder agents at the national border. There are also factories that use the services of gig workers as consultants for distribution systems, warehouse management, packaging and other related aspects of logistics. This exploratory study is looking for factors that encourage the public to become logistics gig employees. The study included gig workers who provided food, merchandise and passenger delivery services. The study method is a mix of qualitative and quantitative modes. The qualitative method is to help to collect all related publications and documents that fit our pre-defined inclusion criteria to answer the research question. The quantitative method is to use a survey form created through google form and distributed to groups on social media that are related to the work of delivering goods, food and passengers. Through qualitative research, several factors have been identified to contribute to the reason why the public chooses to do gigs in the field of logistics. Those factors are Motivational Factors, Human Capital Theory, Economic Benefit, Social Value, Autonomy Value, Development Value, Work-life Balance Value and Social Influence. The research method is done to support the findings from the qualitative method. The results show that all variables contribute to the factors why the public chooses to become gig employees, but the main factor that makes them possible is variable Motivational factor as the main factor triggering the public to become gig workers in the field of logistics.
