Abstract

As an applied research in bridging inequality for the grass-root communities, creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for people with disabilities (PWDs) will be a crucial step towards developing a shared-prosperity model by this research project. The main aim of this research project is to determine the most appropriate bottom-up entrepreneurship activities that will be promoted into sustainable livelihood opportunities for the communities at the bottom of the wealth pyramid, that is, people with disabilities. The study involved seven villages located in the Baling district. This study employed a qualitative method, where data were collected through interviews and focus group discussions. Participants involved in this study consisted of PWDs themselves, their family members, PWDs entrepreneurs, employers and agencies that provide assistance for PWDs as well as NGOs. The findings from this study enabled the researchers to provide valuable suggestions to the relevant authorities as well as developing a model of empowerment of PWDs in entrepreneurship. Challenges, limitations and suggestions for future research are also discussed in the report.
