Abstract

This study examines the effects of participation in physical activity on happiness. Unlike earlier studies, this study uses suicidal thoughts to measure happiness instead of other common measures like self-perceived happiness. A nationally representative data of Malaysia comprising 10141 respondents is used for analyses. The Pearson χ2 and probit results show that physical activity is not significantly associated with suicidal thoughts, which contradicts the conventional wisdom that physical activity improves happiness. Therefore, those responsible for formulating policies should be aware of this evidence. In conclusion, an intervention to increase happiness among adults in Malaysia should not focus solely on encouraging people to participate in physical activity. In addition, more social activities should be organized to enable more interaction among people.
