Abstract

Over the years Malaysian timber companie have been accused of committing ethical, social and environmental wrongdoings. Allegations have been made that Malaysian timber companfos committed human rights abuse illegal logging and trading, and polluted the environment. This research presents a case study examining the social and environmental disclosures within two timber companies around the time when they faced with social and environmental pressures. Theoretically the study is f amed within legitimacy theory and investigate how the Malaysian timber companies manage and preserve their legitimacies through the use of communication-legitimation strategies, namely, 'self-promotion', actual-change' acknowledgement. 'ignorance/denial' and 'deflection'. Data for the study is derived from analysis of the annual repo11s of two big timber companies over Jline years, from 2004 to 2012. The findings indicate that social and environmental dis losure of timbers companies revolve around the social pressures faced by the organisation and the timber companies engage symbolically rather than substantively in their social and environmental initiative to minimise the perceived legitimacy gap
