Abstract
Postgraduate education needs a reform in its assessment systems and workplace based assessment is one of the systems. Most postgraduate students are matured and working adults, assessments of students’ competencies should not be limited to only within the classroom, but it should go beyond. This research investigated the effect of peer-assessment in the classroom also known as student peer-assessment, and peer-assessment at the workplace or co-worker peer-assessment on postgraduate students’ leadership skills. This research involved a class of 14 MBA students from a public university in Malaysia, who enrolled in a leadership course. As part of the coursework, students needed to complete a project which needed them to collaborate with their peers in the classroom and peers at their workplace. The objective of the assignment was to expose students to planning, organizing, managing and leading a project. Two peer-assessment methods were performed. First, student peer-assessment, where student’s classmates as assessors and second, co-worker peer-assessment where student’s office mates as assessors. All assessors were required to rate student’s leadership skills based on a scoring rubric. All assessments were performed online via Google form. Although the mean scores were different, the application of t-test indicated the difference between student peer-assessment and co-worker peer-assessment was not statistically significant due to several factors. However, the qualitative findings from students’ reflections emphasized the significance of co-worker peer-assessment as an alternative assessment appropriate for the postgraduates. This study gives insight into another form of assessment – an assessment beyond the classroom
