Abstract

The nature of most accidents at factories shows that the manufacturing industry is a hazardous site to workers’ safety and health. Factors involved include human behaviour, the difficulties of works, unsafe safety culture, dangerous machinery and equipment being used, and non-compliance to the various set procedures. This study investigated factors that contributed to the development of safety culture in the SME manufacturing sector and how it related to safety performance. Therefore, the population of this study were SME workers in the Northern region of Peninsular Malaysia. A questionnaire-based survey was utilised using a back translated technique before administering it to the workers. The Bahasa Malaysia version was administered to the respondents as it facilitated the communication and understanding since it was assumed that the population were more comfortable in their own lingua franca. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and SmartPLS were used for data analysis purposes. The findings showed that all six factors investigated in this study had a significant contribution to the development of safety culture. Results also indicated a significant relationship between safety culture and safety performance. As a conclusion, this study has made a significant contribution towards the development of safety culture framework from the Malaysian SME’s perspective
