Abstract

This study examines the role of energy security in shaping China's foreign policy toward the South China Sea, with a particular focus on the historical perspective of Malaysia. The overlapping claims in the Spratly and Paracel Islands and security issues in the Straits of Malacca are key elements in Malaysia-China relations. The analysis of this study is based on two main dimensions: systemic and domestic factors. This study also explores how Malaysia's history, particularly the role of the Straits of Malacca as a global trade route since the Malacca Sultanate, has influenced maritime security strategies in the region. The findings of this study indicate that energy security is a critical factor in shaping China's foreign policy, although systemic pressures also play a significant role. Malaysia holds a pivotal position in the complex geopolitical context of this strategic interaction with China
