Abstract

The establishment of Marine Park Areas (MPAs) always puts forward the conserving and protecting ecosystems and biodiversity for future generations’ benefits. MPAs cannot be managed outside the context of human societies that are dependent on their associated ecosystems and resources. However, the local communities’ awareness and acknowledgement of MPA potential contribution to biodiversity conservation are still questionable, as they, in general, have displayed both supportive and unsupportive attitudes towards the establishment of MPAs. This means that local communities’ perceptions need to be considered in the establishment of MPAs as well as their subsequent management, planning and decision making processes. The study of public and community awareness allows an appreciation of wider social knowledge and interests which can positively contribute to achieving conservation objectives. It is crucial to create awareness to the public and community regarding the importance to preserve and maintain all those marine park resources should be emphasized, hence, this study will help to better understand the issue. The objectives of this study are to identify the level of community acceptance regarding the establishment of marine parks; to identify the level of community awareness towards conservation and their readiness in co-management of marine park; to acquire the community view on the prospect of marine park for future generation, and to identify the performance of JTLM in conserving and protecting the marine ecosystem. The scope of the study entails two main groups; the community of the MPAs within the four study areas, namely Pulau Redang, Terengganu; Pulau Perhentian, Terengganu; Pulau Tioman, Pahang; and Pulau Tinggi, Johor, and general public in Malaysia. This study employed two phases of data collection in completing the research process for public and community awareness study on Marine Park Areas (MPAs). The first phase meant for the community with 1015 respondents, and the second phase targets the general public in Malaysia through online survey (387 respondents). Information gathered through quantitative method by using structured questionnaire survey. To summarize, the perception of the communities in the four MPA islands towards MPA are varied depends on the locations, ages and their engagement with JTLM. The most positive perception lies on the establishment of MPA while conservation awareness is the less favorable perception by community. From the perspective of the public, they have strong positive perception towards future sustainability of the marine parks
