Abstract

The range of structured investment products available on the market has increased enormously in recent years.The market growth has been mainly investor-driven.lslamic investment emerged as a response to rising investor demand in the Middle East in the 1970s and is now growing at an estimated annual rate of 15%. Over the years, liberalization of state policies in most Middle East and South East Asian countries have benefited the institutions; lslamic investment has also allegedly further developed in the wake of socially responsible investment and a revival of lslamic ideology as applied to investment ethics. Structured products are generally defined as pre-packaged investment products that combine two or more financial instruments, one of which is a -They have been created to meet specific needs that cannot be met from the standardized financial instruments available in the markets.In addition, they are used as an alternative to a direct investment and as part of the asset allocation process to reduce risk exposure of a portfolio. Nevertheless, structured products are bombarded with numerous Shari'ah issues relating to its operational mechanism as well as its Shari'ah compliance.Therefore, this paper seeks to highlight these Shari'ah issues in relation to structured products in Malaysia specifically and globally generally.
